Gilded bronze head of the Buddha, made using the lost wax method. The domed usnisha is missing the separately cast finial. A narrow band separates the forehead and hair. The small fine hair curls are arranged in linear patterns, the directions changing from front to back. The upper part of each earlobe is pointed, the lower part elongated but would have remained clear of the shoulder. The arched eyebrows form a single sweeping line, the eyes are downcast and heavily lidded, the pursed lips are almost the same width as the nostrils. The oval shaped face is full with rounded cheeks and soft chin and neck. There are two neck rings. The remains of four tenons for the attachment of the head onto a separate body can be seen set into the clay core.
