Description
Jug; tin-glazed earthenware; pear-shaped body; neck almost cylindrical; shaped handle; white ground delicately painted in green, blue, orange, yellow and manganese; angular spout with lion mask and scroll at lower end; lid attached with foliated silver mount; silver mount round rim edge and top of spout; low foot with beaded edge; base slightly hollowed; in front of main body is baroque panel with Triumph of Amphitrite, naked goddess being carried on shell supported by two dolphins with attendant mermaids and cupids; over rest of body are wreaths, festoons, ribbons, sprays of flowers, two wreathed panels containing figures of Venus and Juno, and two cupids bearing inscribed banners; lid has figure of Mercury and scallop-shell in relief; handle decorated with insects.
