Description
Pottery Panathenaic amphora. Design in panels; accessories of white and buff. On the neck, double honeysuckle. (a) Athene standing to left between two Doric columns; she has a high-crested helmet with peak, cheek-pieces turned up, and phalos with volute, the plume of unusual length; aegis with scales, white border, and fringe of snakes in front; long chiton with diploidion reaching to the knees, with white borders, and white girdle; long hair, earrings with long pendants, necklace of beads, and bracelets; her hair, features, and ornaments touched up with buff. On her shield is incised a star of eight points. On each column is a ram turned towards her. (b) Two boxers, nude and beardless, sparring, wearing caestus (gauntlets) , left arms extended; on the right an ephedros (odd competitor with a bye to the next round), nude and beardless, looking on, with right hand on small of back.
