Description
A scene on the broad steps of a house whose street door is partly visible on the left Tom Sheridan escapes down the steps from an intimidating old woman who stands in front of the doorway, pointing a candlestick at him, and with a chamber-pot in her right. hand. She says: "Leave the House this moment ye Scoondrel or I'll shoot you - if e'er I catch you cater-wauling here again, the D'eel take me if I dinna snod you." She is a witch-like creature with a cap tied under her chin, a chequered kerchief, and an apron. The haste of Tom's exit is indicated by one stockinged foot, shirt-sleeves, his uniform coat carried on his shoulder, sword-belt slung on awry, cocked hat askew, waistcoat unbuttoned. He clasps his hand, and looks over his shoulder in terror at the termagant, saying, "And this the consolation of my Virtuous carreer Behold, - Toms Father!!!" On the steps below him sprawls Sheridan, in Harlequin suit (cf. BMSat 9916), saying: "This - hic - be the - hic - comfort of my hic - declining years. - behold - hic my Son - hic Tom. - " After the title: 'D---- all Craft; but, which Craft?' 9 July 1807 Hand-coloured etching
