OVAL GILT-BRASS CASED VERGE WATCH. : CASE: Oval gilt-brass case with a hinged lid and integral back. The band consists of a middle, upper and lower moulding with four recesses in its upper edge for the lugs around the dial. The band is joined at XII but has also been soldered together on one side where there is a fracture. The case is undecorated except for the inside of the lid which is crudely engraved with a a shield of arms, a name and two initials. Cast gilt-brass pendant, no provision for a finial. : DIAL: Gilt-brass dial with an engraved chapter-ring with Roman hour numerals I-XII, and dot half-hour marks, surrounded by a circle of touch-pins, the one at XII being higher and sharper than the others. The spandrel spaces around the chapter-ring are engraved with a gadroon type ornament. Within the chapter ring, the dial is engraved with a design of foliage with two snails and two butterflies. The single blued-steel hand may be original but has undergone serious remodelling. : MOVEMENT Frame: Oval gilt-brass plates with four baluster pillars. Around the perimeter of the pillar plate an engraved foliate border with straps at the top, bottom and sides. A potence-hole in the pillar-plate. Riveted potence and riveted counter-potence, both probably original but altered. : Mainspring & Set-Up: Gilt-brass barrel with a dovetailed cap and riveted steel hook. There is a large rectangular brass repair plate in the barrel wall. The mainspring is a blued-steel replacement. Bow and arrow set-up mounted on the potence-plate. The spring and ratchet original, the wheel replaced. : Fusee & Stop-Work: Gilt-brass fusee with gut line and standard stop-work. There are now two steel ratchet clicks. : TRAIN: Gilt-brass three-wheel train, the second and contrate wheels with three crossings and domed collets. : ESCAPEMENT & BALANCE: Verge escapement, the crown wheel, verge, balance, balance spring and balance cock are all later replacements and modifications. : MOTION WORK/DURATION: Pinion of report:5 Dial wheel 40 Fusee:12 turns Duration:18 hours. : TRAIN COUNT Great wheel:55 Second wheel:48 pinion:5 Contrate wheel:42 pinion:5 Crown wheel:17 pinion:6 [replaced] Pinion of report:5 Dial wheel:40 : Beats per hour:16,755.2
