Description
Hammock composed of 10 hand woven cotton narrow strips hand sewn together selvedge to selvedge. The ground weave is plain woven with dyed orange/brown cotton warps and wefts. The hammock is extensively decorated in blocks of weft faced plain weave and supplementary weft decoration using dyed light green, dark green, orange, yellow, red, black, purple and blue. The supplementary weft decoration consists of geometric representations of animals and basic geometric patterns. The is lettering along the centre of the hammock "Walter Bell Rest A While" in supplementary weft. The warp edges are decorated with tassels made from cotton dyed yellow, orange, purple, red, green, blue, grey and natural coloured cotton. The weft edges of the hammock consist of plaited warps which have been wrapped in coloured cotton. These lengths would be used to fix the hammock to a frame.
