Marble slab of the Amazon frieze of the Mausoleum of Halikarnassos. It represents combats between Greeks and Amazons. This slab shows four figures, two Greeks and two Amazons, and parts of a horse, carved across the join between two slabs (1014 and 1015). On the left a Greek and Amazon, both standing, fight. The Greek, nude apart from a Corinthian helmet with crest, lunges powerfully towards the Amazon. His shield is thrust against the left thigh of the Amazon. The Greek’s thrust has forced the Amazon back. The action of her hands suggests that she was grasping an axe. The Amazon wears a chiton belted at the waist, leaving her left breast bare. The lower part of the chiton flies out from below the belt, exposing her body from the waist downwards. Her hair is drawn up into a knot with loose strands on top of her head. To the right a Greek has taken a massive stride forward to the left to strike at a fallen Amazon. His gaze is fixed on the face of his opponent. His right arm was raised above his head to strike with a spear. The Amazon has fallen to the ground before the Greek’s attack and lies with her weight supported on her left thigh and left arm. She looks up towards the Greek. The Greek is nude apart from a Corinthian helmet with crest and a shield. The Amazon wears a chiton belted at the waist slit on the lower edge. Her hair is drawn up on top of her head. On the lower right corner part of the left hind leg of a horse, on slab 1015, is carved. The weapons were attached in metal, carved or may have been painted. On the shield of one of the Greeks traces of red paint are visible. Slab 1014 is part of a sequence that continues on slabs 1013 and 1015.
