Description
Pottery: black figured neck-amphora. (a) Contest of Heracles and Nereus: In the centre Heracles to right (lion's skin with tail caught up under a belt, short chiton, and sword at side) has seized Nereus round waist with left arm, and with right hand grasps the other's left arm. Nereus is partly bald, with white beard, long white tresses, fillet, and long embroidered chiton; his right hand is raised, and he endeavours to escape to right. On the right is a Nereid retreating and looking back, with long tresses, fillet, long embroidered chiton and himation, and left hand raised. In the field, a tree from which hang Heracles' bow and quiver; around Nereus, water is indicated by black smudges. (b) Dionysos riding to right on an ithyphallic mule, looking back; he has a long pointed beard and long tresses, ivy-wreath, short chiton and embroidered himation; in right hand a vine-branch with bunches of grapes, his left hand holds the bridle, close to the bit. Behind Dionysos is a Satyr to right, holding the mule's tail with right hand, left hand laid on its back; in front of him is a Satyr approaching to left with askos over left shoulder.
