Description
Pottery: red-figured kantharos: head of satyr and woman. The lower part is in the form of heads of a woman and a bearded satyr back to back. The flesh of the satyr is coloured bright vermilion, his beard and hair a darker red. His eyes have had the details painted, but the colour is worn off. The flesh of the woman has been covered with a white ground, on which probably colour was laid, but it is now almost entirely worn off. The satyr has his lips parted. These heads support a two-handled cup, on which is the design. Late period. Rays, fruits, and taeniae in raised reddish-white. Halter in purple. (a) Eros, with hair radiated, holding a large box decorated with stars, and containing fruits, on his left hand, and flying towards a woman on the right seated in a chair; she leans her left arm on the chair-back, and holds out her right to receive the box; she wears a long chiton, mantle, bracelets, and a fillet. (b) A Satyr (?), wearing a fillet, leading with a halter a deer to right towards an apple tree.
