Description
Marble head of a man from the archaic temple of Artemis. On its right side is a worked smooth flat area, which indicates that this fragment was either attached to a relief background or is part of a frieze or square pedestal made in separate blocks. The remainder of the face must have been carved on the adjoining block, now missing. The features are east Greek Archaic in style, with fleshy cheeks, a broad nose, long thin lips turning up at the outer edges and long, almond shaped eyes. The pupils would have been painted and traces of paint are preserved on the top lip and between the lips. The forehead is very flat.
