Description
Pottery: red-figured kylix. Interior: Within a circle of sets of seven to ten meanders separated by red cross squares, Eos pursuing Kephalos (or Tithonos). Eos wearing spotted sleeved chiton, undertied, an himation over her shoulders, and a spotted cap, runs with wings folded to right, seizing with her two hands the neck and right arm of Kephalos, who flies, looking back; he has long hair looped up over the ears, holds a chelys in his right, and wears a mantle which leaves the right arm free. The feet of the figures rest on no ground-line, but the left foot of Kephalos overlaps the border of the design, the edge of which runs through it. Exterior: (a) Two groups of men and youths conversing. On the left a figure whose head is missing leans on a staff with right arm akimbo, left hand raised, talking to a youth en face, whose head is turned towards him, and who carries a staff on his left arm: the first figure is confronted by an old man, bald on the crown, who rests his right on a staff. On the right a youth to right leaning on his staff, talking to a bearded man who stands en face, his right resting on a staff. All the figures wear mantles which leave the right arm free. In the field hang a chelys (on left), a shield (part seen) with device of a star, and a sword projecting from beneath it (between the groups), and a helmet on a rectangular support (on right). (b) Similar scene. On left a bearded man (right arm akimbo, leaning with left on staff), and a youth leaning on his staff, confronted; then a youth resting right on staff, moving away to right, looking back with a gesture of surprise; then a bearded man, who with right forefinger extended seems to be commanding a youth who confronts him leaning on a staff. All the figures wear mantles which leave the right arm free. Drawing rough and careless, perhaps under the influence of Brygos. No purple. Brown for inner markings and for folds of dress of Eos. The articulation of the sternum is indicated by a series of short brown lines. No purple. Surface ruddled. Eye of developed transition type. Beneath each handle, a single palmette with tendrils.
