Description
Pottery: red-figured cup. INTERIOR: youth playing pipes. A youth moves to the right, bending forward as he plays a pair of pipes. He has a dotted chlamys with a black border draped over his left shoulder and a red band in his hair with three large blossoms at the front. On the right leans a knotty stick; from which hangs by a red tie a food basket with red tassels (much of the basket is missing together with the youth's left foot). Border: stopt maeander (four-stroke, anticlockwise). EXTERIOR: symposium. Side A (upper): symposiast, flute girl and komast. On the left a youth with a himation (black border) around his waist and legs reclines to the left on a couch with a backrest. He turns his head to the right and gestures with his right hand (the hand is missing), his left resting on the back of the flute girl in the centre. There is a red band with three large leaves at the front round his head. His cushion is a wineskin and a skyphos rests on the ground under his couch. A food basket with red ties hangs from a red tie up on the left, while a plain stick leans against the handle-root. In the centre stands a woman playing the pipes to the right. She is dressed in a chiton, shoes and a plain sakkos. On the right is a komast in an extraordinary pose. He is bent over and seen from behind so that, in extreme foreshortening, between his splayed legs appear his anus, his testicles and penis, and his belly, and to the left his shoulders and the back of his head. His left hand is on the ground, his right on his right buttock. He wears a pair of shoes and has a red band around his head with blossoms on either side. On the left a dotted chlamys with a black border, presumably his, is wrapped around a plain stick. A food basket with red tassels hangs from red ties up on the right. Side ? (lower): youth kneeling on a couch, youth dancing and youth playing the pipes. On the left a youth kneels on a couch with a backrest, as he wields a wineskin over his head. He has a red band in his hair with large leaves at the front. On the couch is his dotted himation (black border). Hanging up on the right is a food basket with red ties (most missing). In the centre dances a naked youth. He kicks up his right foot and swings his arms to keep his balance, his right behind him, his left above his head. He has a red band around his head with two large blossoms at the front. On the right hangs a spotted flute-case. On the far right a youth leans to the left on a knotty stick as he plays the pipes, a chlamys (black border) draped over his lower back and the crutch of the stick under his right armpit. He has a red hair-band with five large leaves at the front; a relief line indicates that his cheeks are puffed. On the extreme right a food basket with red tassels hangs from red ties. Ground line: two reserved lines. Relief contour throughout (except hair); dilute glaze for minor interior markings; thick reserved line inside lip, thin outside; added red for inscriptions.
