Description
Stage 2 of conservation treatment, detail right side, after restoration April 2008. Icon painted in egg tempera on wood prepared with cloth and gesso. Subject: the Noli me tangere and other scenes from the first Easter morning. In a rocky landscape, the three cross of Calvary at top left, and buildings of medieval Italian style at top centre; at upper right are the myrrh-bearers with the angel at the Sepulchre (Mark 16:1); at left centre is Mary Magdalene at the Sepulchre with two angels (John 20:13) with, below, the greeting of the myrrh-bearers; at lower centre and right, on a larger scale than the other figures, is the Noli me tangere, in which Christ stands at right, nimbed and elaborately draped, holding a scroll in his left hand and extending his right to the kneeling figure of Mary; between them a vase.
