Description
Brigandine formed of iron scales riveted inside a fabric doublet originally covered with red velvet. The plates on the body section are small and trapezoidal except for those down the centre of the back whose overlapping edges are formed as an ogee design with a central knop, decorated with stippled dots and engraved eyes at either side of the centre. There are eleven columns in the back overlapping from either side of the centre towards the arms, those above the waist overlapping upwards and those of the skirt overlapping downwards. Around the neck and at either shoulder is a band of plates with scalloped edges, that for the right shoulder, largely missing. At the waist is a row of angled plates, scalloped above and below, most of these are missing across the centre of the back. The front panels open down the centre and there is a row of eyelet holes at either side of the front opening, either arm and shoulder for laces. Each is composed of seven columns overlapping towards the arms and away from the waist. Each front panel is bordered at the arm edge with a row of eyelet holes for lacing it to the back. Both shoulders are damaged and substantial parts of them are missing. Each plate is attached to the fabric coat by a straight row of three, four or five copper-alloy rivets, the plates themselves retain evidence of tinning. Around the edge of the skirts and around the neck the plates are decorated with rosettes of rivets. The coat is very fragile and extensively damaged.
