Description
Painting on paper depicting Shiva as Daksinamurti. In a hilly landscape, in the shade of a banyan tree, Shiva sits in lalitasana on a tiger skin. His right foot rests on the back of the Apasmara purusha. The god, dressed in a tiger skin and with his hair piled up on his head, carries in his upper right hand the damaru, in his upper left hand the trishula, in his lower right hand the rudrakshamala and in his lower left the kapala. Dakshinamurti is flanked by two yogis, whose hands are in anjali mudra, who listen attentively to his words. Both sages have their knees tied by a yogapatta, wear rudraksha beads ornaments and tripundra marks are drawn on their foreheads and arms. The Apasmara purusha is as described in the Nataraja drawing: of dark complexion, armed with sword and buckler, and with protruding fangs. Tripundra marks adorn his forehead and arms. This is one of the few leaves in this album where the landscape is not merely hinted at. Here rolling hills, thickets where roams a solitary boar, and tufts of grass enliven the foreground.
