Description
Bombardment Extraordinary, or Achilles versus Punch; study for a satirical print in the series 'Political Sketches', published by Thomas McLean, 1821-1851; heavy artillery, in the form of Scarlett crouching on a gun-carriage as the big gun, is aimed at a flimsy Punch and Judy box in which a puppet, Robert Alexander (?), displays a paper inscribed "no [the rest illegible]", while Wellington holds out a baton as if about to fire the touch-hole, Sugden pushes against the Attorney-General's posterior, and is himself pushed by Brougham, Lyndhurst threatens with a mace, Lord Holland with gouty leg flourishes a crutch against Wellington, the Duke of Cumberland and Eldon scamper off, and above, the forms of Canning (?), Fox (?), and other dead ministers look down in horror, in a reference to the libel actions against 'Morning Journal'. 1830 Pen and brown ink with graphite Verso: A Pair of Very Riotous Fellows alias Radicals of the New School; Lord Stanhope and Lord Eldon in top hats stand together, tipsily swaggering, while Wellington dressed as one of the New Police watches them, in a reference to the Tory revolt against Wellington. 1830 Graphite and black chalk
