A heavily potted chizou-type ovoid jar with a wide mouth, short neck and ridge around the foot. It has a broad foot ring and an unglazed base. Painted with a design in iron brown on a cream slip ground beneath a transparent glaze. Around the shoulders it is inscribed with characters which read, from right to left, Zhengtong shiyi nian wu yue chu yi ri [Made at the beginning of the first day of the fifth month of the eleventh year of Zhengtong (AD 1446)]. Below this is an interlocking chain border of white on brown. In the main register is a hastily executed lotus scroll and there are overlapping lotus petals above the foot. The glaze has misfiired and is rather blotchy.
