Casket; wood; embossed, incised and stamped leather; flat-topped and rectangular; lid and sides divided into a number of panels, scenes of which were divided by metal mounts, original ones stripped off and replaced by base metal ones; lid with central rectangular scene of six people and four surrounding scenes showing grotesque personifications of the elements and dragons; inscribed around edge; inside lid is the Annunciation, between panels of floral scrolls with birds; second inscription on left hand side; on sides are eight scenes of lovers talking and embracing beneath trees; sides and base of box are lined with silk on which is painted the Crucifixion between two kneeling figures, intended to represent the 1st Earl of Shrewsbury and his wife; base of casket painted with quartered shield within circle with leaves.
