Description
A woman's head scarf. Made from two loom widths of natural coloured tabby woven cotton cloth sewn together along the selvedge; hand spun and hand woven. A solid embroidered band (made of two sections) is sewn to one warp end, which has been turned and machine stitched. The ground fabric (a heavier weight tabby cloth) is crocheted to the main fabric and a vertical line of crochet, worked in yellow cotton, joins the two sections together. A square motif, worked in cross stitch (using blue (alternately green) brown and yellow cotton threads) in a black field. Above this are two rows of embroidery, imitating braiding, worked in silver-coloured metal-wrapped thread, and a small register of blue (alternately green) crosses within a diamond pattern. Red cotton fringing is sewn to the bottom of the head scarf. The main part of the head scarf is undecorated save for two small floral motifs. The upper right corner has been folded over and stitched and at two of the three corners are an eight-petalled flower: pink wool and yellow, green and blue cotton thread.
