Description
A woman's ankle length shirt, or chemise. Long sleeved, with a tightly gathered neckline. Made of undyed cream-coloured tabby woven cotton cloth; handspun, hand woven and hand stitched. [The section below the waist - weaving width 43 cm - is made of a coarser fabric.] 'V' neck opening with a line of small black and brown crosses; black cotton thread blanket stitch edging around the neck and cream cotton drawstring. Two vertical panels, a repeating geometric four-petalled flower motif, decorate the shirt, both front and back, worked mainly in black but with some pink, orange, green and purple woollen threads. These colours are used to embroider diagonal lines of eight-petalled flowers on the sleeves, with an almost solid black ground. A narrow panel of red running stitching separates the upper from the lower part of the sleeve. The bottom of sleeve formed into a cuff. Seams in upper part of garment strengthened with black embroidery. Narrow black and red zigzag embroidery at hem. Save where mentioned all embroidery is cross stitch.
