Description
Album bound in calf with blind ruling, the front and back covers with a gilt quatrefoil containing a Latin cross and 'AWP' in monogram (Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin's own binding), and on leather labels on a banded spine (repaired) 'A.W.N./PUGIN/SKETCHES' and 'FRANCE/&C/II', containing 111 drawings (drawn on the recto and occasionally also on the verso, and including some studies for engravings and some architectural drawings) mostly inlaid into 97 album leaves within drawn borders, with architectural details, studies of mainly ecclesiastical objects and furnishings, and topographical views; also 10 leaves with inscribed titles, 11 blank leaves (including 2 fly-leaves), and fixed and free marbled endpapers; including studies of Medieval and other objects in private collections (Dugai, Gérente, Caudron, Soltikoff), studies of monumental brasses, stained glass, paintings, illuminated manuscripts and tapestries, a bridge, a cottage interior, abbeys, and other buildings variously in Paris, Rheims, Rouen, Poitiers, Beauvais, Amiens, Abbeville, St Riquier, St Quentin, Douai, Troyes, Dijon, Tours, Loches, Beaulieu les Loches, Blois, Bordeaux, Auch, Toulouse, Lucerne, Giant's Causeway, Dunseverick, Fair head, Carrick-a-Rede, Dunluce, Ballygally, Carrickfergus, Cushendall, Beaugency, Orléans, Jumièges, Rebais, Caen, Rome, St Omer, Milan, Ostend, Bury St Edmunds, Kent, Caernarvon, Grantham, Louvain, Cologne, Drachenfels, Chartres, and Oxford. 1827, 1846-7 Most drawings in pen and black ink over graphite, a few with (or touched with) watercolour; others in graphite; some on grey paper; 2 drawings on tracing paper and another on embossed paper; some paper watermarked.
