Description
Icon painted in egg-tempera and gold leaf on wood prepared with cloth and gesso. Subject: St Nicholas. The nimbed, bearded figure of St Nicholas, wearing an omophorion, attribute of a bishop, and holding a sword in one hand and in the other hand, the fortified city of Mozhaisk, which he saved; surrounded by scenes from his life: the birth of the Saint, the miracle in the bath, the healing of the woman with a withered arm, he receives his education, he becomes a priest, he is made a deacon, he is consecrated a bishop, he purifies a well by chopping down a tree beside it inhabited by a devil, he appears to Constantine in a dream, he rescues a ship-wrecked sailor, he saves three Christians about to be beheaded for their beliefs, he restores a lost child to his parents, the translation of the saint to Myra, the dormition of St Nicholas.
