Gouache painting on paper from a portfolio of sixty-three paintings of deities and daily life. The red-complexioned Gaṇeśa rides on a large bandicoot, sumptuously caparisoned and bejewelled. In Gaṇeśa’s upper right hand is the ankusha (elephant goad), in his upper left the pasha (noose), his lower right hand carries the broken tusk, and with his trunk he nuzzles the laddu (sweetmeats) held in his lower left hand. His ample waist is adorned by a large snake. Tripundras (three horizontal lines) are drawn on the god’s forehead, throat and arms. He wears a dhoti with the angavastra (shawl) draped over his elbows and the usual ornaments. A dark-complexioned attendant follows him, carrying an umbrella. Tufts of grass are lightly drawn in the foreground.
