Description
A vertical line bisects the design and the seated figure of Britannia, who, Janus-like, faces in opposite directions. In profile to the left, her hands tied, she is emaciated, moribund, and ragged. Her physicians are Wetherell who forces her to drink from a bottle labelled 'A Very Black Draught', and Goulburn who picks her pocket. In profile to the right she is a stalwart figure holding a staff topped by a cap of 'Liberty', and facing Thomas Attwood, who brings in a huge steaming joint of roast beef. Her recovery began with 'the Russell Purge' (see No. 16602). (Reform is attributed to the Birmingham Union, see No. 16870, &c. Cf. No. 16069, &c.); proof before the published state.
