Anti-catholic satire with Queen Elizabeth as Diana, seated in judgment upon the Pope as Calisto. Elizabeth, naked, is seated to right holding a shield with the coat of arms of England and surrounded by nymphs representing the protestant powers of Europe; to left, Pope Gregory XIII is stripped by allegorical figures of Time and Truth. Beneath the pope are large eggs, one of which has an inscription referring to the assassination of William the Silent by Baltasar Gérard in 1584, another carries the name of Chiappino Vitelli, the general in the service of Spain who came to England in 1569 in an attempt to negotiate peace; from others hatch creatures including a cockatrice labelled "Inquisition". c.1584 Engraving and etching
