Description
Red figured pottery pelike of Apulian style.
Designs red on black ground, with white accessories; above, (a) palmettes and egg-moulding, (b) laurel-wreath with a rosette in the middle. Under the handles, palmettes and rosettes; below the designs, maeander all round. Round the foot, modern egg-moulding.
(a) Female figure (Aphrodite?) seated on a four-legged stool to right, with face to front, hair tied in a top-knot and hanging in curls over shoulders, open cap, radiated fillet, earrings, necklace, bracelets, long girt bordered chiton and apoptygma, bordered himation over knees, and sandals; in right hand a mirror, in left a box with open lid; her feet rest on a footstool. Before her stands a female figure (Peitho?) with white cap, necklace, bracelets, long chiton, himation, and sandals; in left hand an embroidered taenia, with right she holds up her himation; this figure has been partly painted over.
