A dandified man (left), in civilian dress, but holding an opera-hat with cockade, bows, holding out with a cynical smile a garter to a young woman (right). She holds a tiny fan affectedly before her face and coyly advances to take it. The pair are conspicuous in the middle of a large room, carpeted to the wall, and without furniture except for the corner of a buffet with jelly-glasses in the background (left), where two women watch the encounter with horrified amusement. Other guests stand in conversation against the wall, or watch the centre pair. Two of the men are in regimentals. The women's dresses reach almost to the ground, a new fashion. 10 November 1821 Hand-coloured etching
