Description
Plaque, rectangular; painted Limoges enamel on copper: Allegorical representation of the cardinal virtue Hope. Represented as a young woman, bare breasted, wearing a headdress comprising a portrait bust in a leafy medallion, set within an architectural niche; signed 'P.I.' at the top right and dated '1541' in the sunburst at top left, inscribed at the bottom below the figure, 'SPES'. Painted in grisaille with flesh tints, details produced by enlevage. The architectural niche in translucent green, blue and gold over foil of crude dashes and crosses; details gilt. Counter-enamel translucent and colourless, with Penicaud stamp.
