Description
Harness-fitting; yoke terminal. A pair of 1850,0801.2. Horn-shaped and hollow, each object has a flattened and decorative terminal at the end of a tubular body which expands toward the lower end. The tubular part is curved, the convex side being decorated and the concave side ending in a projecting flange. At the inner end of the flange is, in each case, a roughly rectangular hole, 17mm by 12mm. On either side of the base of the tubular part and at the end of the flange there is a rivet. The top of each 'horn' is decotrated with ornament apparently cast, basically a ying-yang but with the inverted, s-shaped, central division left plain and the comma-shaped spaces on either side filled with horizontal ridges. In the centre is a double concentric circle in relief and a single ring is present in the broader end of each ouside section. The convex surface of one horn is decorated with three bands of furrowed ornament, that in the centre horizontal, that on either side oblique. On the other horn the ridging on all three bands is oblique. These objects, although they have been regarded as hand-grips on a chariot, have also been interpreted as the terminals for chariot poles, or they may have formed the terminals of yokes.
