Hamid Tibouchi

Born Tibane (Bejaia), Algeria, 1951

Tibouchi is a painter and poet, associated with the 'Peintres du signe' movement. His paintings, monotypes and drawings have been described as signs rather than images; they are infused with the colours of his Algerian home village – ochre, black and blue. He attended the Ecole Normale Supérieure, Algiers, and received a degree in plastic arts from the University of Paris VIII. He has had sixty solo exhibitions in France, Spain and the USA, and has participated in many group exhibitions in France, Europe and the Arab world. His works are in public and private collections worldwide. In 1994 he received the Public Prize at the Salon Découvertes in Paris. He has lived and worked in the Paris area since 1981.
