Walid Siti
Born Duhok, Iraqi Kurdistan, 1954
Siti graduated from the Institute of Fine Arts, Baghdad, 1976. He then travelled to Slovenia, where he obtained a BA and MA from the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana, 1977–82. In 1984 he moved to London, where he has been living ever since. Siti is a painter and a printmaker. He has drawn most of his subject matter from his experience of war, pain and loss. He has exhibited in Europe, the Middle East, Russia and Asia, including several solo exhibitions in the UK – among them Leighton House, London, 1996 – and, more recently, at Salman’s Gallery, in his home town of Duhok, 2004. His group exhibitions have included a number of print biennials such as the fifth Sharjah International Arts Biennial, UAE, 2001; the tenth Asian Art Biennial, Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2002; as well as the Contemporary Art Society, London, 2004.
