Youssef Nabil
Born Egypt, 1972
Nabil's work is an innovative combination of contemporary blackand- white portraiture and the traditional technique of hand-coloured photography. Having grown up in Cairo, imbued with the golden cinematic age of Hollywood on the Nile, his own work is influenced by the glamour, elegance and melodrama of hand-coloured black-and-white movie-poster prints he nostalgically recalls from childhood. Nabil worked with David Lachapelle and Mario Testino and has established himself at the forefront of contemporary photography in the Arab world and beyond. Nabil's work has been exhibited in Recontres de la Photographie, Arles, the Aperture Foundation, New York, Institut du Monde Arabe, Paris, and FotoFest, Houston. He lives and works in New York.
