Hana' Malallah

Born Theeqar, Iraq, 1958

Hana' Malallah studied at the Institute of Fine Arts in Baghdad where she was taught by Shaker Hassan al-Said, obtaining her diploma, 1979, BA, 1988, and MA, 2000 from there. In 2005 she was awarded a Ph.D on the philosophy of painting. She is currently head of the Graphic Art Department at the Institute of Fine Arts and lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts, Baghdad. She has exhibited widely in solo and group exhibitions, most recently in the travelling exhibition Dafatir, Contemporary Iraqi Book Art, which started at the University of North Texas, 2006, and with Rashad Selim at the Aya Gallery London, 2007 in the exhibition Sophisticated ways of destroying a city. She has won a number of art prizes and her work is in private and public collections including the Museum of Fine Arts, Amman Jordan. Her recent work, which consists of books and multimedia works, is increasingly concerned with the loss of Iraq's heritage through the destruction of its libraries and the looting of the National Museum following the US led invasion of Iraq in 2003.
