Satta Hashem
Born Diale, Bohrez, Iraq, 1959
Hashem studied fine arts at the Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts, Algeria, 1978–80, and at the Institute of Fine Arts, Moscow, Russia, 1983–4. He continued his studies in Russia, obtaining an MA in fine arts,mural painting and decorative arts from the Leningrad V. Mukhina College of Arts and Design, 1989. He then moved to Sweden and later to England, where he now lives and works. In 2003 Hashem won the annual Nottingham Castle Open Art Exhibition, following which he had a solo exhibition at Nottingham Castle Museum and Art Gallery, 2004. Recently he was commissioned by Liverpool Museums and Leicester City Arts and Museums Service to create a body of work on the theme ‘Freedom’, which will be part of a touring exhibition to four UK cities from June 2007 to June 2008. His work includes paintings and drawings as well as mural paintings.
