Abdallah Benanteur

Born Mostaganem, Algeria, 1931

Portrait of Abdallah Benanteur A painter and engraver, Benanteur graduated from the Ecole des Beaux- Arts, Oran, in 1948, fufilled his military service in 1951 in Kabylia (Algeria), and moved to Paris in 1953 as a painter. He became an engraver in 1962 and has produced over 1300 livres d’artiste – many of them small editions – illustrating Persian,American, German and English poetry as well as the work of contemporary Algerian writers and the poetry of his wife, Monique Boucher, who is also a painter. He has participated in several painting exhibitions and international biennials of graphic art. His work is in numerous public and private collections. Retrospectives of his work were held at the Museum of Modern Art of the City of Paris, 1970, and the Institut du Monde Arabe, Paris, 2003. Benanteur was professor at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Paris, and Ecole des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, 1970–5. He lives and works in Ivry-sur-Seine, France.
