Suad Al-Attar

Born Baghdad, Iraq, 1942

Portrait of Suad Al-AttarAl-Attar graduated in fine arts from the University of Baghdad,where she later taught, and from California State University. In 1975 she moved from Iraq to London and received a postgraduate diploma in printmaking from the Wimbledon School of Art and the London Central School of Art and Design.Throughout her prolific career she has been inspired by her Arab Iraqi heritage, including the Epic of Gilgamesh and ancient and contemporary poetry. She has focused on specific subject matters, fantastic landscapes, city views and mystical figures.Al-Attar has had a number of solo exhibitions and gained several awards from international biennials, including London 1978, Cairo 1984, Brazil 1985, and Malta 1995. Recently her work has been included in Bagdad–Paris,Artistes d’Irak, Musée du Montparnasse, Paris, 2005–6, with a solo exhibition at Leighton House, London, 2006. She lives and works in London.
