Mouneer Al Shaarani

Born Syria, 1952

Portrait of Mouneer Al ShaaraniAl-Shaarani graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Damascus, Syria. He began calligraphy at an early age under the celebrated Syrian calligrapher Badawi al-Dirani (d. 1967), himself a student of Turkish master calligrapher Hamid al-Amidi. Shaarani’s work includes designs for books and typeface characters as well as publications and articles on calligraphy. He has exhibited on several occasions in the Middle East, North Africa and Europe, including his display of calligraphies inspired by ancient Arabic poetry in Oxford, 2005. Al-Shaarani lives and works in Syria.
