What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

Tickets on the day

Each day, 100 tickets for that day will be available to purchase at the Ticket Desk in the Great Court. They are likely to sell out quickly so do come early to avoid disappointment. You may also need to wait between your ticket purchase and your timed exhibition entry. To get free unlimited entry to the exhibition, become a Member

Before you enter

  • Only small bags will be allowed into the exhibition (max size 35x33x13cm)
  • Coats, umbrellas, etc. should be left in the cloakrooms (max size 40x40x50cm and max weight 8kg)
  • The cloakroom is to the left of the Main entrance. £1.50 per item
  • The Museum reserves the right to search any bags or personal items being taken into the exhibition.

While you are in the exhibition

  • Do not use photographic or video recording equipment
  • Do not carry or consume any food or drink
  • Set your mobile phone to silent
