Matthew Boulton:
the Art of Making Money

Bronze medal, 1809
2009 sees the bicentenary of the death of
Matthew Boulton with Birmingham institutions offering a season of events to mark the occasion.

The Art of Making Money explores Boulton’s contribution to Britain’s industrialisation thought the coins, medals, and trade tokens he produced from his Soho Mint, which were by far the most widely distributed images of his era and utterly essential to the growth of the modern cash economy.

This exhibition will draw on the Barber Institute’s own collections plus items from the British Museum, Birmingham Assay Office and Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.
