When I was 13 me and my sisters absolutely adored '10 Things I Hate About You', a film set in an American high school which is based on the story of The Taming of the Shrew. We used to watch it on Saturday mornings on VHS – so often that I think we probably wore out the tape in the end!
I remember being absolutely astonished when I found out that it was originally a Shakespeare play. Not long after our summer of watching the movie I saw the film version of The Taming of the Shrew with Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor. Matching up the characters and the plot to the film we all loved so much was a really effective way of understanding the play and Shakespeare's language – and I have loved both films ever since.
