The Staffordshire Hoard was discovered in July 2009, and is a
unique find containing over 1,800 gold and silver objects.
The announcement of the discovery on 23 September astonished
experts and made headlines around the world, with people queuing
for up to three hours to see the hoard in Birmingham Museum when it
first went on display. A temporary display of some objects from the
hoard is due to open in the British Museum on 3 November 2009.
Dr Kevin Leahy, National Adviser for the Portable Antiquities
Scheme, is the expert who has been studying the hoard. In this
lecture he gives his first impressions of cataloguing the
Staffordshire find, including the shock of finding a profusion of
previously rare objects, such as shimmering gold set with
garnets.
The hoard will answer some questions, but raise many more, such
as what its date is, where it came from, who collected it and why
they put it into the ground 1,400 years ago. This is the start of a
long and exciting exploration of this magnificent treasure.
