Sir Crispin Tickell, Director of the Policy Foresight Programme
at the University of Oxford and former British Ambassador to
Mexico, discusses historic Mexican cities and their growth in
relation to environmental considerations.
Around half the human species now lives in cities, yet cities
have always been vulnerable places. Nowhere is this better
illustrated than in the history of Central America and in
particular Mexico. Today the world faces a combination of hazards,
from human proliferation to climate destabilisation. The industrial
revolution, which led to the current society in the West, is based
on cheap energy and rapid exploitation of natural resources, yet
both are now in question. Tickell also examines the future of
cities and suggests what they might be like in 100 years.
