Mocking the powerful has a long pedigree in the Middle East and North Africa. The advent of mass images, photographic reproduction and the internet has created a rich field for political comment – carrying with it very real dangers for some of the artists and caricaturists.

This lecture by Charles Tripp, Professor of Politics at SOAS, examines how power has been caricatured throughout the regions' histories, with a focus on modern and contemporary politics. It will investigate the nature of political struggle and assess what effect humour has in challenging the status quo.

Presented in collaboration with the British Academy.
