What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

A chance to get involved with the Museum and learn more about its collection during a fun family day!

Alongside members of the British Museum Youth Panel, BMuse, six Young Friends have the chance to take part in one of three actvities based around an object in Room 2.

You can either participate in an object talk around an Ice Age object of a horse engraving on a bone, help with object-handling using similar objects from the same period, or help with an activity encouraging audience participation.

There will be two relaxed training sessions, one on Tuesday 19 March 17.00-19.00, which will be an introduction to Ice Age Art and you can 'meet' the object, and a second one on Tuesday 26 March, 17.00-19.00. On these evenings you will get to meet the BMuse team assisting you on the day, and this will be a chance for you to ask any questions that you might have before the day itself.
