Ian Goldin and Chris Kutarna, co-authors of Age of Discovery: Navigating the Storms of Our Second Renaissance, discuss the parallels between the Renaissance and our present times, in which scientific discovery is racing forward, and human health, aggregate wealth and education are flourishing; while also addressing how we can grapple with the same dark sides of rapid change: social division, political extremism, insecurity, pandemics and more. This discussion will draw reference from Renaissance objects in the British Museum’s collection which reflect the progress and ideals of this age of discovery, the breaking down of barriers of ignorance, and a newly connected world both politically and economically.

Ian Goldin is Professor of Globalisation and Development and the founding Director of the Oxford Martin School at the University of Oxford. He previously was Vice President at the World Bank and Advisor to President Nelson Mandela.

Chris Kutarna is a two-time Governor General's Medallist, a Sauvé Fellow and Commonwealth Scholar, with a doctorate in politics from the University of Oxford.
