The Kirwan Memorial lecture is held in honour of Sir Laurence P Kirwan, the first president of the Sudan Archaeological Research Society, who was active in Sudan’s archaeology throughout his long life.

The annual lecture is given by an eminent scholar in the field and is published in the next issue of the Society’s bulletin, Sudan & Nubia.

The 2015 Kirwan Memorial lecturer is Dr Krzysztof Grzymski, Senior Curator of Egypt and Nubia at the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto, Canada. He succeeded in this position the late Nicholas B Millet who between 1963 and 1966 directed the American excavations at Gebel Adda (Egyptian Nubia). Millet published several preliminary reports, but he never managed to complete the final report. Following Millet’s death Grzymski became responsible for handling the Gebel Adda collection and documentation housed in Toronto. He is also conducting fieldwork in the Sudan, co-directing excavations at Meroe.

The lecture will be preceded by the SARS AGM at 17.30 and followed by a reception.
