What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

For Key Stage 2 students.

Explore the seafaring life of a Viking.

This session will begin with time in the exhibition Vikings: life and legend, where your students will work as historians finding out about the Viking world. Students will meet a number of facilitators who will encourage them to use the objects as a source of primary evidence before taking part in a final plenary in a Clore Education Centre lecture theatre. Lunch slot included.
