What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

Leading international academics present perspectives on shunga.

The morning session, 'Laughing with shunga', chaired by Exhibition Curator Timothy Clark, looks at humour in these works.

The afternoon session is titled 'Women and shunga'.

Please note that this day features talks in English and Japanese with no accompanying translation. Brief summaries in English will be provided of the talks in Japanese.

Includes content of a sexually explicit nature. Parental guidance advised for under 16s.
