What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

Carl Langebaek, Vice President for Research at the University of the Andes, Colombia, discusses the nature of power among indigenous societies in pre-Hispanic Colombia.

He considers how power was acquired and manipulated, how it affected or benefited indigenous people, whether members of the elite had higher standards of living, and whether their descendants were able to inherit this power.

In collaboration with Embassy of Colombia to the United Kingdom.
