What just happened?

To celebrate Vikings Live, we have replaced our Roman alphabet with the runic alphabet used by the Vikings, the Scandinavian ‘Younger Futhark’. The ‘Younger Futhark’ has only 16 letters, so we have used some of the runic letters more than once or combined two runes for one Roman letter.

For an excellent introduction to runes, we recommend Martin Findell’s book published by British Museum Press.

Create a short story using magical realist techniques.

Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude, which examines Colombia's recent history, is recognised as masterpiece of the genre. You will visit the section of the exhibition that explores pre-Hispanic mythology to be inspired by societies for whom mythical figures played an active role in their reality.

Award-winning novelist and short story writer Leone Ross will then help you create a short piece of prose in the magical realist genre.

In association with Spread the Word.
